The result of the calculation determines the minimum size of the electrical service — typically expressed in amps, such as 200A, 225A, or 400A — along with the size of the service entrance conductors, the main panel, and any subpanels feeding detached structures, shops, or ADUs.

Why Load Calculations Matter for New Construction

On a remodel or a service upgrade, we’re often working with a known, existing load profile. New construction is different: there’s no history to lean on, so the calculation has to be built from the ground up using the building’s planned square footage, appliance schedule, and mechanical loads. Getting it right matters for a few concrete reasons.

First, it’s a permitting requirement. The building department in your jurisdiction will not approve electrical plans for new construction without a load calculation that justifies the proposed service size. For commercial and mixed-use new construction, the calculation follows a different set of rules depending on occupancy type, and often involves coordination with a mechanical engineer or the project’s engineer of record, particularly when large HVAC, refrigeration, or process equipment is involved. We work directly with architects, general contractors, and other trades throughout this process so the electrical service size lines up with what’s actually being installed — not just what was assumed at the schematic design phase.

Common Mistakes We See on New Construction Projects
